Mental illness crisis in America

The Guardian is running an excellent series about the lack of any coherent mental illness treatment program or policy in America. As someone who has first-hand knowledge of this mess I am hoping that we as a nation recognize that this ignorance of mental illness must stop. My sister has schizophrenia and she is bi-polar. She also doesn’t recognize that she is mentally ill. Which is not unusual. Families often know that something is wrong but find it impossible to get help for their family members. Some families simply deny that there is something wrong.

The killing spree by the mentally ill misogynistic jerk in Santa Barbara won’t be the last one. And that is the crime – all the legislators who can’t be bothered about learning what can be done. Yes treating mental illness costs money – but not treating mental illness is far more expensive.
